The Little League® Pledge was written by Peter J. McGovern, the late president of Little League Baseball, in 1954. It made its first appearance in the February 1955 Little Leaguer® magazine. Its text has remained unchanged in the half-century since then.
Did you know that we have a Little League Challenger Division right here in District 2?
What is the Challenger Division?
The Little League Challenger Division® was founded in 1989, and is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges.
Any individual with a physical or intellectual challenge may participate. If an individual can participate in the traditional Little League Baseball or Softball program with reasonable accommodations they should do so. The Little League Challenger Division accommodates players ages 4 to 18; or up to age 22 if still enrolled in school. The Senior League Challenger Division accommodates players ages 15 and above (no maximum age).
Maryland District 2's Challenger program has been supporting the special needs community since 1989. Their program offers an adaptive baseball program for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. They teach baseball fundamentals – throwing, catching, hitting, base running and field positioning – and provide instructional opportunities appropriate to the physical and mental limitation of each player. Players with supportive devices (walkers, wheelchairs, canes, etc.) are all made to feel at ease and welcome on the field. A supportive, non-competitive environment is our priority. The all-inclusive atmosphere of Frederick Challenger enables all who participate to enjoy the experience of a team athletic activity without limitation.
